Fuller Long are delighted to have assisted in gaining listed building consent for major refurbishment of a grade II listed Arts and Crafts and Art Deco house in Weybridge, Surrey.
The approved consent will allow our client to undertake a loft conversion of the property, together with a number of other alterations including the modernisation of the heating system providing energy efficiency improvements, installing underfloor heating with associated works to the floor and the reinstatement of traditional fireplaces.
Due to the historic nature of the building, the degree of remaining historic fabric and the scale of the works proposed, our heritage team needed to provide a robust heritage impact assessment with justification. The property has a complex history; it was built in 1926 and designed by Westwood and Emberton, both notable architects during the early 20th century. The key significance of the building related to its historic and architectural interest. The site is a stand-alone dwelling and a tangible reminder of early 20th century living and high-quality craftsmanship, having been constructed as a single dwelling house it remains in that use, proving adaptable and attractive for 21st century life. The building has architectural value that reflects the prevailing style, materials and detailing of the late Arts and Crafts and Art Deco movements.
Having reviewed the scheme, the case officer at Elmbridge Borough Council stated that the accompanying heritage statement provided valuable insight into the history of the building and justification for the works. As such, the officer concluded that the proposal was in accordance with both local and national planning policies, including “DM1 – Presumption in favour of sustainable development” and “DM12 – Heritage” of the Elmbridge management plan.
